General Notes: The story of Dominic O'Mungan his life and descendants to the next 2 generations, especially includingBishop Mongan Warburton, is told by Norman Mongan in his book ‘The Menapia Quest.’ published Herodotus Press 1995,p165-169. He was the famed blind "poor road-way" bard harpist of Tyrone County.
Dominic married Warburton (Possibly).
General Notes: The identification of an Alicia Warburton as cousin-german to Terence Charles on the latter's grant of a namechange means that either Dominic married a Warburton, or his sister-in-law did. It is not known who this Warburton family is, but the most likely candidate is the descendants of the three brothers (Richard,George, and John) who appeared in Ireland in the 17th century and established themselves as a major Anglo-Irish Protestantfamily. Such a connection could also explain why the sons of a blind harpist could afford such a sound education, and why two ofthem subsequently renounced the Catholic faith.

General Notes: According the ‘Menapia Quest’ by Norman Mongan page 166, Mark was educated to be a priest andachieved excellent results at the College in Louvain. But when he returned from his study "he fell into a decay and died at hisfather's house in Strabane". 3. John Mongan (Dominic 1) was born about 1753 in Monaghan, County Monaghan Ireland and died on 31 Oct 1803 in Monaghan, County Monaghan Ireland aged about 50.
General Notes: According the ‘Menapia Quest’ by Norman Mongan page 166, John was the second son of DominicO'Mungan. He practised in and about Monaghan as a medical doctor, and had a good reputation. He recanted his Catholicfaith and was killed in a carriage accident coming home from the races at Middleton. Family belief in Australia is that he was married and had several children, including Sophie Caroline Mongan, John CharlesMongan, and John Mongan. Upon his death it is supposed the children may have been brought up in the household of hisbrother the eventual Bishop of Cloyne. People in Australia (Mongan in Yackandandah, Victoria) believe they may be descendants of this doctor through his sonJohn Mongan. However, the desent from this doctor son of Dominic O'Mungan is problematical. It is supposed, throughfamily tradition, names and coincidence of dates, that the doctor who died in a gig accident, was father of this John Monganwho died on board the ship Hindoo en route to Australia. His wife Eleanor or Ellen McElvey and his sons eventuallysettled at Yackandandah Victoria. There are known male descendants to 2008. DNA has been taken from a living descendant of the Mongan who died on thevoyage, (from Mark Mongan aged 88 in 2008). This DNA it is hoped would match that of a male descendant of the BishopMongan Warburton (brother to the doctor) or other male descendant of the doctor. The descendants of the Bishop seem tobe the most likely possiblity to find. John Young now deceased, researched the line from Sophia Caroline Mongan Fairtlough into the Young and Kirchofferlines and his work was republished by Tim Sandberg. Tim has summarised John Young's remarks below. "This Mongan used the given name John. His brother John Charles has been recorded as John Mongan, John CharlesMongan and Charles Mongan. It is probable that he used the given name Charles to distinguish himself from his brother

with the given name John". The same family folklore existed in the Australian Mongan family, as in the Canadian descended Mongan/Young/Kirchhofferfamilies. The story of the Bishop matched. In fact, the Australian Mongan family understood that Dr. John Mungan andMiss Alcock had six children and some of them were brought up by Bishop Dr. Charles Mongan Warburton. It can beassumed that the clerical Alcock family also reared some of the children. The name Mark has been carried on through thegenerations in the family in Australia. This fact is significant. Additional note by Elaine Hopper. In the year 2008 Mark Angelo Mongan, the assumed great grandson of the medicaldoctor, remains alive at 88 years, living near Yackandandah Victoria Australia. The given name Mark from the earlier granduncle, Mark, the priest, has been carried down through the family for centuries including into the children of Mark AngeloMongan of Yackandandah's 2 sisters Maura Mackay and Jane Patricia Murphy.

General Notes: A good reference to the life of Terence, his forebears and some of his children, is the book ‘Menapia Quest’,by Norman Mongan (The Herodotus Press, 1995). He was known by the first name Charles and anglicised his surname fromO'Mungan to Mongan and then to Warburton as detailed here. He also renounced his Catholic faith and joined the establishedchurch, which enabled his career to blossom. His early education to be a priest was undertaken in France. His first career was as an army chaplain and details are availableon the website of the 62nd regiment to which he was for some time attached:http://www.62ndregiment.org/Charles_Mongan.htm’. The site describes how he served in North America during the American War of Independence. During this time, in 1779 hemarried Frances Marston, a very well connected New York woman. She was probably his second wife who bore his childrenand outlived him. Details of his first wife are unknown. Doll (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2000). Page 243 describes how, after the war,in 1785 "Robert Lowth, now Bishop of London sent the Reverend Charles Mongan, an army chaplain who had been afavourite of Sir Guy Carleton in New York, on a one-year study of the church in Canada". The ‘London Gazette’ Issue 13196 published on the 27 April 1790 stated: Dublin-Castle, April 16, 1790. Letters Patenthave been passed under the Great Seal of this Kingdom, granting the Deanry of His Majesty's Cathedral Church of St. Patrick, in the Diocese of Ardagh, to the Reverend Charles Morgan, A. M. An ERRATUM in the next issue corrected hisname to Mongan. The London Gazette’, issue 13241 published on the 28 September 1790, chronicles Charles Mongan's retirement from thechaplaincy of the 60th (or the Royal American) Regiment of Foot: William Leslie, Clerk, to be Chaplain, by Purchase, viceCharles Mongan, who retires. In 1792, Mongan changed his name to Warburton as announced in the ’London Gazette’ of 22nd May 1792, page 334. Theentry reads : The King has been pleased to grant to the Reverend Charles Morgan, Master of Arts, Rector of Loughgilly, inthe County of Armagh, and Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Ardagh, in the Kingdom of Ireland and his issue, his RoyalLicence and Authority to assume and take the Surname of Warburton only, in pursuance of the desire of his maternal cousin-german, Miss Alicia Warburton, spinster, sister of the late William Warburton, of the City of London Esq, deceased; and alsoto order that His Majesty's concession and Declaration be entered in His College of Arms. The following issue of the LondonGazette noted an ERRATUM to the effect that the name was Mongan. It is not yet known who the Warburton relations, William and the spinster Alicia were, but the term cousin-german, whichmeans a full cousin' would suggest that Charles' mother's surname was Warburton, since Alicia the spinster was aWarburton. The William Warburton is not believed to be the famous Bishop William Warburton. After changing his name Charles rose in the church, eventually becoming the Bishop of Cloyne, and extremely wealthy andwell-connected. ‘Clerical and Parochial Records of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross’ by William Maziere Brady (1864), details his children, though itnames a Maria and not the Bishop's beloved daughter Selina who died just before him, to his great grief, in 1826 and who isburied near and commemorated with him in Cloyne Cathedral. Nor does it mention a daughter, Charlotte. However the willsof his sons Augustus and Garnett both mention their sister Charlotte. Selina had died by the time the wills were made. AMaria is not mentioned in the wills. There was a Maria Warburton, daughter of the Bishop's son, also a cleric, CharlesWarburton, Archdeacon of Tuam, and this may be where the confusion arose. The Bishop died at Cloyne on 9 August, 1826, and was buried in that Cathedral on 12th August. On his tombstone is thisinscription: To the Memory of the RIGHT REV. CHARLES WARBURTON, D.D., Lord Bishop of Cloyne, Deceased 9thAugust, A.D. 1826, Aged 72 years. This memorial of affectionate Regret is erected by his disconsolate Widow, FrancesWarburton, and Children. He was consecrated Bishop of Limerick 13th July, 1806, and translated to this See 20thSeptember, 1820. To a dignified Deportment in the strict Discharge of his Holy Office, he united most engaging Suavity ofManners and unbounded Benevolence.

His executorsare named as his brothers Charles and John Warburton. He leaves money to them as well as his pictures to John and hisfurniture and silverplate to Charles. He makes gifts of money and bequests to his nephew Garnett Philip Maunsell, describedin the will as the son of his late sister Charlotte and Rev Archdeacon Maunsell, and to his nieces Charlotte and SelinaDeborah daughters of the same couple. His remains areinterred in the family vault at St. John's Churchyard. He was the son of William Maunsell, Chancellor of Limerick, and ofLucy, daughter of Philip Oliver, born 1782 in Co. Limerick. Archdeacon Maunsell married Charlotte, daughter of The RightRev.Charles Mongan Warburton, Bishop of Limerick. Maunsell graduated A.B. T.C.D. in 1802, and A.M. in 1806. He wasordained Priest at Cloyne on 24th August, 1803, and was, from 1814 to 1860, Archdeacon of Limerick, and also, from 1822to 1860, Precentor of Cloyne. He was also for some time Vicar-General of Limerick. According to the ‘Limerick Heritage’ web site: In 1824 Archdeacon Wray Maunsell made an interesting discovery in the bogof Rathcannon when the complete skeleton of an Irish elk was found. The skeleton can now be seen in the National Museumof Ireland. Archdeacon Maunsell died, aged seventy-eight, on 25th July, 1860. 10.
