Isabel Quijada is currently Tenured Research (2007) at the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology (ICTP) at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid. She received her Ph.D. (1996) at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid working at the ICTP on the diffusion of additives in polypropylene and nylon 12 and studding the behaviour of their blends. After her Ph D. degree, she made a post doc stay at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz under the supervision of Prof. Hans W. Spiess and Manfred Wilhelm. She spent two years (1997-1999) at the Institute for Macromolecular Chemistry of Freiburg (Germany) in the group of Prof. Claudia Schmidt. During her post-doc in Freiburg she was involved on the study of the rheological behaviour of some thermotropic side-chain liquid crystal polymers and lyotropic surfactant solutions. Since 2007 she belongs to the staff of the CSIC as a Tenured Researcher.
Her research group works on the development, characterization and applications of stimuli-sensitive polymers, and on the development of intelligent and biodegradable polymers. Exploiting advanced techniques, such as MRI (nuclear magnetic resonance imaging), they have investigated the swelling kinetics and diffusion of drugs as function of external stimuli. Biocompatible and biodegradable substrates based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have been modified for tissue engineering applications (bladder and bond regeneration). They are also working on methodologies for the surface modification of PHAs with thermo-sensitive polymers to control cell adhesion. Nowadays, they are developing methods to integrate stimuli-sensitive polymers with micro- and nano-structured materials.
