37th ICAO General Assembly sees aviation greenhouse emission breakthrough
At the end of difficult negotiations during the 37th session of the Assembly of the International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO), the 190 contracting states succeeded in striking a global aviation emissions deal. ICAO has
agreed on a global medium-term goal of capping aviation emissions as of 2020, whilst recognising that States or

US serious runway incursions cut in half for second year in a row
The FAA announced that the number of serious runway incursions at US airports dropped 50 percent during fiscal
year 2010 (ending 30 September) to six serious incursions. This is the second consecutive year that the number
of serious incursions was cut in half. Several years ago the FAA launched an intensive effort to improve runway
safety including the expedited installation of new technology, new requirements for marking and improved pilot

Aircraft operators alerted to the risks of transporting lithium battery as cargo
Aircraft operators have been alerted by the US FAA about the results of new research on the risks associated
with transporting lithium batteries as cargo on aircraft. In a Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO), the FAA
summarised recent research which shows that lithium batteries are highly flammable and capable of igniting
during air transport under certain circumstances. The SAFO also lays out procedures air carriers can institute
when transporting such batteormation. EASA has published a Safety Information
Bulletin (SIB) supporting the SAFO’s recommended acti to access it.
Bombardier announces the launch of two new large business jets
Bombardier Aerospace announced that it will launch two new aircraft in the large, ultra-long range business jet
category, the Global 7000 with a range of 13,520 km and Global 8000 with a range of 14,630 km. Entering service
in 2016 and 2017 respectively, these aircraft will feature an upgraded lighter fuselage with enlarged windows and
an all-new high-speed transonic wing. Combined with next-generation GE TechX engines, the new types will have

Aerolineas Argentinas to join SkyTeam alliance
The flag carrier of Argentina, Aerolíneas Argentinas, will shortly sign an agreement to officially start the process of
joining the SkyTeam airline alliance. When it joins, it will become the first South American member of the group.
SkyTeam, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, also recently announced that China Eastern and China
Airlines will become members in 2011. Click for more information.
Ryanair announces closure of Marseille base
Ryanair will close its only French base at Marseille from 11 January 2011. The four based aircraft and 200 jobs
will be moved to other airports. This follows the start of legal proceedings against Ryanair due to its Marseille
based flight crew paying taxes and social contributions in Ireland. The airline argues that this fully complies with
the European Directives on transport workers. Ryanair will nevertheless continue to operate ten Marseille routes
using aircraft based elsewhere. Click ion.
NetJets signs for up to 125 Embraer Phenom 300 business jets
Aircraft fractional ownership company NetJets signed a purchase agreement with Embraer for 50 Phenom 300
business jets, plus 75 options. The total value of the deal may exceed US$ 1 billion at the current list price.
Subject to the finalisation of the contract by January 2011, deliveries of the new aircraft will begin in 2013. Click

Hong Kong Airlines confirms Airbus A330 and A350 XWB order
Hong Kong Airlines has finalised a contract with Airbus covering the firm order of 10 more A330-200 long-range
aircraft and converting an existing order for 15 A330s to the A350 XWB. Both agreements were previously
announced during the Farnborough Air Show in July this year. Deliveries of the A330-200s will begin in 2012,
while the carrier's first A350 XWB will arrive in 2018. Hong Kong Airlines has now ordered a total 33 wide-body
aircraft and 30 single-aisle airc for more information.

Three Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft ordered for Libyan Airlines
The holding company of Tripoli-based Libyan Airlines, Libyan African Aviation Holding Company, has placed a
firm order for three CRJ900 aircraft and taken options for three more. Libyan Airlines currently operates three
CRJ900 and two CRJ900 aircraft in a two-class configuration with seven business class and 68 economy seats.

European road safety days 2010
The European Road Safety Days were held on 13 and 14 October 2010. Since 2001, the number of road deaths
has fallen by 44%. Nevertheless, more than 35,000 people die on Europe’s roads every year. For every fatality, it
is estimated that four people are permanently disabled by injuries such as brain or spinal injuries, ten are
seriously injured and 40 suffer minor injuries. A conference focussing on the importance of the cross-border fight
against traffic offences was organised in Brussels by the European Commission, in cooperation with the Belgian

Defining the average European citizen on World Statistics Day
Wednesday 20 October marks the first World Statistics Day. To mark the event, Eurostat, the statistical office of
the European Union and the 27 National Statistical Offices of the Member States published a joint news release
highlighting the important role of official statistics in supporting government policy, guiding decisions and providing

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the European Commission traineeship programme
2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the European Commission’s traineeship programme. It is the longest running
traineeship programme of its kind and the biggest in the world in terms of the numbers annually recruited. The
trainees, or ‘stagiaires’ as they are more commonly known, work with the Commission's full-time officials on a
wide range of tasks for a five-month period. In 1960, the first year of the programme, there were three trainees.
By 1983 this figure had risen to 500 and it has now reached around 1200. The traineeships office manages the
