Ethnographic Film and Psychiatry: Documentary presentation of help seeking from India
The ethnographic documentary Kusum (2000) will be shown and discussed with its scientific advisor. The film is an audiovisual documentation in traditional treatment of psychological problems of an Indian family. Kusum is an ordinary teenage Indian girl. She lives in Delhi, goes to school and thinks about her future. Until she falls ill. Kusum stops eating, isolates herself and has severe fits of bad temper. Spirits are troubling the family, says Bhagat, an experienced healer. The family seeks help from western medicine but eventually turns to traditional spiritual healing under Bhagat in a healing shrine. There is considerable evidence from the Indian subcontinent that rural and urban community- based healers and healing shrines offer help for mental suffering. Ethnographic accounts of mental health treatment in so called traditional societies show moreover that rather than being excluded, the afflicted individuals become a centre of caring and attention by their relatives and fellow villagers. As professionals of crisis solving, healers organize and lead group sessions aimed at interpersonal healing and community reintegration. Does family-, network- and community-oriented treatment in the west something similar across distances in time, place and culture? How can ethnographic documentaries contribute to our conceptions of traditional healing and spirit possession? Focus will be on the logic of the local healing system via ethnographic visual examples of treatment explained by the praxis. Discussant: Antti Pakaslahti, MD, PhD, Ass. Prof. of Transcultural Psychiatry, School of Public Health, University of Tampere, Finnland (research and scientific advisor of the ethnographic documentary) Chairpersons: Martine Verwey, MA, Medical Anthropologist, Zürich Mitchell Weiss, PhD, MD, Prof. & Head, Dept Public Health & Epidemiology, Swiss Tropical Institute, Basel
