To lead on the physical well being of the pupils within an interdisciplinary team.
To ensure active participation of each pupil where they can learn, practise and
generalise skills across their waking day.
To enhance learning within a model of Conductive Education.
To monitor pupil’s physical levels, adapt and progress programmes as necessary and
refer to appropriate agencies/specialists as required.
To train all staff involved in each pupils care so that they can carry out daily
physiotherapy management and to review and monitor this.
There are several important elements to the role of Physiotherapist at Rutland House School that may be summarised as:
• Development and maintenance of physical skills.
• Ensuring access to relevant and appropriate equipment.
• Liaison with parents and outside agencies.
The specific responsibilities of each element are described on the following pages. The ordering of the above elements of the role implies no priority. Each broad area of responsibility needs to be balanced to ensure that the physiotherapist makes a significant impact on the quality of education and care delivered to our pupils.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Development and maintenance of physical skills
• To work closely with teaching, therapy and support staff providing positioning
advice that reflects an active approach that supports children’s learning.
• To support staff in the residential settings to ensure that pupils are active
• To assess children’s physical needs so that you can create, monitor and evaluate
• To evidence development and directly contribute to records of achievement
• To inform and consult with members of the team on any management changes that
Ensuring access to relevant and appropriate equipment
• To work with the visiting orthotist to provide the most suitable orthosis to enable
• To contribute to in-service training to ensure all staff supporting the children have
• To liaise with the school risk assessment team to ensure a problem solving
approach is adopted that enables children to participate
• To assess children for new and forward thinking equipment that will enable active
Pupil Progress The following are some examples of how the physiotherapist might ensure that each pupil receives the highest possible standard of physical care and wellbeing:
• To contribute to the planning of short and long term objectives for children
• To be responsible for ensuring assessment and target-setting is kept relevant and
• To maintain an overview of every pupil through reading and checking the relevance,
cohesion and consistency of each Individual Education Plan.
• To be involved with the interdisciplinary assessment of potential pupils to the school
• To contribute to the development and planning of the children’s educational
• To keep and maintain appropriate records of the children’s development
• To contribute to the child’s annual review report
• To provide a high standard of physiotherapeutic interventions based on sound
clinical experience, theoretical knowledge, current research and clinical governance to fit within the schools model of conductive education.
Liaison with parents and outside agencies
• To liaise with parents and other professionals to ensure consistency and continuity
in the management of the children’s physical skills and wellbeing
• To liaise with the orthopaedic, spinal and baclofen pump teams in order to secure
effective advice and intervention for the consistent management of each pupil
• To attend orthopaedic appointments with the pupils and ensure effective
communication with parents and staff regarding the outcomes of such appointments
• To maintain good contact with the pupil’s parents and participate in home visits with
• To develop and maintain positive working relationships with the PCT’s and
• To attend relevant case conferences as necessary
