Masters Thesis: Music across the curriculum as uncharted territory in the land of higher education. The paper attempts to merge the fields of music and literature by suggesting teaching African-American spirituals alongside Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. Initially the paper discusses the history of the spirituals from storytelling in West Africa to the black church in America. Finally, application is made to Douglass’ Narrative with specific teaching suggestions for incorporating music into the liberal arts classroom. A case study concludes the research, which includes a daily teaching guide for the Narrative, instructor survey, and discography. Memberships: Pi Kapp Lambda, SAI Teaching Experience
