Emergency Procedures

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Stay calm and reassure those around you. Always work as a team with other staff and keep the best interests of the children in mind. Do not perform First Aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) unless you have a current certification and we have a copy of it on file. Do not touch blood or other bodily fluids without gloves. Stay with the injured person. If there are no other staff members or cabin leaders around, send
THREE responsible students for help.
Never do anything that could endanger yourself or others. All other staff (who are not involved) will attend to business as usual, unless otherwise directed. Immediately follow all requests from the Director or designated point person without argument. Only the Director (or if incapacitated, the point person) will talk to schools/parents/media.
IF THE DIRECTOR IS UNAVAILABLE
If the Director is incapacitated or offsite, alert YLP Director and Program Manager. They will select a point person who is in charge and that person should try to solicit other staff members’ opinions where practical before making major decisions. Any decision made by the point person must be followed immediately. The point person will also designate a scribe to record all activity (if practical).
FIRE OR EVACUATION:
In case of fire/evacuation, we will gather in the ball field. Help all children and cabin leaders walk calmly to the ball field and gather with their cabin. All staff should bring their cabin roster and their vehicle keys. All cabin leaders are to take roll of the students in their cabin, remain with their cabin, and help the children to remain calm and follow instructions. The Director (point person) will instruct 1-3 staff to do a sweep if not everyone is accounted for. The Director (or point person) will instruct everyone on whether (and how) to evacuate. Please help the children and cabin leaders to follow all instructions immediately and calmly. IF A STUDENT IS MISSING:
If a student is lost or intentionally disappears, let the Director know immediately. We will implement a search and post someone by the phone. If the child is not found within 30 minutes, we will call the sheriff. Notification of a parent/guardian is at our discretion.
AFTER THE IMMEDIATE CRISIS HAS PASSED:
When relieved from the situation, return to the rest of your group and play down the event as much as possible—DO RUMOR CONTROL! Rumors can lead to panic, which can lead to more accidents. Debrief with another staff person or the Director if necessary. Do not debrief with the children. It is acceptable to ask another staff person to relieve you for awhile if you were shaken or need time to process the experience. Try to accommodate any other staff members who have been through a crisis if they ask you to relieve them. Write an incident report if the incident/accident was significant. This is to help answer questions which might come up significantly later (months), when the incident is not as fresh in your mind. It can help to protect The Mosaic Project and you from possible legal liability. There is no form for an incident report; simply answer all the basic questions (who, what, when, where, why, how). Please ask the Director if you need help completing an incident report. REMEMBER: STAY CALM; DON’T LET PANIC CAUSE A SECOND EMERGENCY!
