This month’s issue is somewhat smaller than usual mainly because the sun is shining in Ireland and most people are enjoying it while they can! The Translation Turn in Cultural Studies

This conference addresses the various issues that are raised by the recent move towards translation studies within the field of cultural studies. Although the cultural studies world has been painfully slow in recognising the value of research in the field of translation, in recent years the significant parallels and the sheer extent of the overlap between these two interdisciplinary fields has compelled many cultural studies scholars to take what has been termed the `translation turn'.
Invited Speakers: Mary Snell-Hornby, Rosaleen Howard Proposals for papers of 20 minutes are invited on the following topics: the power relations that come in to play in the choice of texts to be translated how different cultures construct their image of writers and texts trough translation the role of translation in the construction of literary canons how certain texts become cultural capital across linguistic boundaries the role that translation plays in colonial and post- colonial identity construction processes such as mimicry.

Quality in translation - Academic and professional perspectives

Recent advances in technology are increasingly gaining importance in the field of translation and interpreting, entailing major changes not only in the training of future professionals but also in the everyday practice of those already established on the market.
These technological advances have undoubtedly served to enhance the productivity of translators and interpreters. At the same time, however, they have contributed to new levels of competition within the sector and created a new type of global working environment, which has not always led to improved working conditions for the professional translator. Given these developments, the quality of the work of a professional translator (or more precisely, the certification of this quality) is rapidly becoming a key variable in the attempt to improve working conditions and achieve public recognition of their work. Online Masters in Technical Communication

MATComm, the Master's course in Technical Communication, teaches the underlying theories and skills for writing in technical and business contexts. It is taught solely by distance-learning.
The MA in Technical Comminucation is a three-year programme taught solely by distance-learning. For this reason, the course is spread over three years, each of which leads to its own qualification. The course has a several key aims.
Year 1: The Certificate teaches the basics of Technical Communication.
Year 2: The Diploma teaches more advanced or specialised topics.
Year 3: The Master's year allows you to explore in detail an aspect of technical and business communication. You can normally complete the course within three years, though you have up to five years to do so. You can also stop your studies at the stage they want, for example, at post-graduate Certificate or Diploma level.
