General Health Recommendations
Many patients have asked me what I do to try and stay healthy. As we all know, we live in a very toxic world and it is much more difficult to thrive than it was only one hundred years ago when there were no synthetic chemicals to deal with. We also live in a very stressful world and most of us have sedentary jobs and making time for exercise and relaxation needs to be built in to our hectic schedules. So, with that in mind here is a work in progress of what I am currently doing.
Exercise: I do a combination of cardiovascular, resistance and stretching exercises. One of my
favorite styles of exercise is callanetics, which combines resistance and dynamic stretching. I try to incorporate weight training, walking, hiking and biking into my routine as well.
Diet: Eat as many organic foods as possible and try to eat a primarily alkaline diet. We have a
handout explaining the alkaline diet, the principles of which can be applied to most styles of Detox: I use a Far-Infrared sauna quite often and will occasionally use cleansing products to try
and eliminate as many toxins as possible. There is an excellent article at Dr. Garry Gordon’s ) from National Geographic about the toxins we are all exposed to. I recommend downloading a copy and reading it.
Supplements: There are so many brands and types on the market that it can be confusing just to
know what to take, which brand and how much. I make it a priority to research as much as possible to make the best, most well informed choice I can. So here is a list of the regular items For a multivitamin I take Juice Plus. There are many whole food supplements on the
market but none have the research to back them like Juice Plus does. You get the equivalent of 5 fruits and veggies daily and 3 grams of fiber with 4 capsules daily. I take 4 capsules daily, occasionally taking more at times. You can talk to Deana at our office or call Joan Eller at 770-532-2485 for more information or to order it.
Omega 3 fatty acids from Fish Oil are very important for decreasing inflammation and
with helping to maintain weight, memory and many other things. I take between 2 to 4 grams daily and I take them with phosphatidylcholine to enhance absorption.
Phosphatidylcholine makes up approximately 50% of every cell wall in our bodies and
can help with liver detoxification as well as possible memory enhancement by increasing acetylcholine levels in the brain. I take between 1 and 3 grams daily. The brand I use is Nutrasal and they make both a liquid and a capsule version, either is fine. Another source of phosphatidylcholine is lecithin and sometimes I will use 1 to 2 tbsp daily of Lecithin powder from Premier Research labs in place of the phosphatidylcholine itself.
Magnesium is involved in over 300 different enzyme systems and is necessary for RNA
and DNA replication, ATP production for energy as well as proper heart and nerve function. It is advisable to take as much as is tolerated of this nutrient up to your bowel tolerance. Bowel tolerance is reached when your body will simply not absorb any further magnesium and produces diarrhea. So, take as much as is tolerated without causing diarrhea. If you find that you reach bowel tolerance with less than 1000 mg then you may have a magnesium block and may benefit from adding Choline-CDP to enhance absorption. I recommend at least splitting the dose between morning and bedtime and not taking it just once daily. So, there is no set amount to take, it is based upon individual needs. The brand I take is Premier Research, being magnesium glycinate. Premier’s coral calcium also has magnesium as well.
Co-Enzyme Q-10 is needed for ATP production in every cell, especially the heart that
has 10,000 mitochondria per cell compared to 200 to 2000 mitochondria for all other cell types. Obviously, the heart is working hard all the time so it needs a great supply of energy. I recommend at least 100 to 200 mg daily, others may need more if heart disease is present or if they are taking statin drugs to lower cholesterol levels (Statins like lipitor and pravachol lower not only cholesterol but also Co-enzyme Q-10 levels so if you are taking statins, you should definitely be taking Q-10 and you may even want to check your blood levels as well). I take Ubiquinol from Premier Research Labs ½ to 1 tsp daily.
DHLA Nano-Plex is a form of Lipoic acid that not only helps to recover the function of
all your anti-oxidants like vitamins C and E and Glutathione but is also a free radical scavenger itself, helping to decrease inflammation in our bodies. It has also been shown to be a great heavy metal chelator, removing these from our bodies and also helps with insulin sensitivity and nerve protection and repair. I recommend at least 160 mg daily (½ Super Nano-Green Tea: Green Tea Extract has polyphenols and other beneficial
nutrients that may help to decrease our risk of cancer and help with energy and is a great anti-oxidant. I take at least 1 tsp daily, but often will add more if I need an energy boost Max Stress B Nano-Plex: B-vitamins are involved in almost every chemical reaction in
our bodies in one form or another. The B-vitamins we take are usually converted to their active forms by beneficial bacteria in our GI tracts, however, due to toxins and antibiotics these bacteria may not be fully present, so I take a liquid b complex that has been activated by bacteria. I take ½ to 1 teaspoon daily.
Heavy Metal Nano-Detox is a chlorella tincture for heavy metal detoxification and
general body detoxification. I use ½ to 1 teaspoon daily. You can probably tell that the above 5 supplements are from the same company (Premier Research Labs) and what I do with them in the morning is to combine them together with pomegranate juice or another organic juice as my morning “cocktail.” Calcium: There are many types of calcium and no particular one is applicable to
everyone. I take Coral Complex from Premier as well, generally around 500 to 1000 mg
If I were to limit myself to only a few supplements, my top 5 would be Juice Plus, Fish oil,
DHLA, Coral Calcium (due to its magnesium component as well as the other minerals) and
Coenzyme Q-10.
This is a work in progress and will be updated periodically.
Best of health to all,
