No. 9
Phil Walker’s film "General Orders No. 9" – a visual/poetic history of Georgia
which he produced and edited - will screen at the Slamdance Film Festival in
January—one of only eighteen films in competition out of nearly 5000
submissions. Slamdance runs concurrent to the Sundance Film Festival in
Park City, Utah. Slamdance began in 1995 to protest the increasing
influence of Hollywood on Sundance. It has since become one of the most
influential film festivals in the country while still maintaining its indie film
credibility. This is the third festival for "General Orders No. 9", including the
Atlanta Film Festival and the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham. You can

Friends of the Arava Institute, the Jewish National Fund, Center for Civil and

University Dept. of Religious Studies and Middle East Center, American

Grammy Award winning Christian McBride is a master of the acoustic and
electric bass who is also recognized widely as a composer and leading voice
for jazz’s place among America’s treasures. While he has made a name for
himself accompanying the varied likes of McCoy Tyner, Sting, Kathleen
Battle, and Diana Krall, McBride’s own recordings of original compositions
and invigorating covers of standards reveal the breadth of his artistry. Now,
this remarkable talent comes to the Rialto with his all-star combo, Inside
Straight.
The Capitol Steps

They began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very
people and institutions that employed them. Although not all of the current
members are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have
worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices and represent 62 years of
collective House and Senate experience. They've been featured on NBC,
CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public
Radio stations nationwide presenting their Politics Takes a Holiday specials.
The Capitol Steps performance is presented by the Peg and Bill Balzer Family Endowment for the Rialto. There’s free parking in the Equitable Building across the street. For more
